Christy and Trevor’s time in Houston, TX 1

Christy and Trevor today at M.D. Anderson Cancer Clinic

Christy & Trevor at M.D. Anderson

Christy and Trevor arrived in Houston Sunday, December 18th. Christy’s hotel room does not have a recliner so she slept flat in bed and slept pretty well.

Christy’s first appointment was with an endocrinologist at 9 o’clock on the 19th, with a Dr. Cabanillas who specializes in Thyroid cancer. As always we get good news and bad. Good news is the doctor feels like this cancer will respond to the iodine treatment because when the CAT scan was administered in November, the lymph nodes absorbed that iodine very well. Bad news is this type of thyroid cancer can go to other parts of the body, unlike other thyroid cancers that tend to stay in the neck and chest. Dr. Cabanillas did mention to Christy that she could go to UCLA for the iodine treatment, she is confident about a endocrinologist that she knows there. She feels if they if Christy & Trevor do not want to fly back to Texas Christy will be in good hands, apparently not many doctors on the West Coast know much about tyroid cancer (in her opinion) and this doctor at UCLA does. If any further treatment does need to be done Dr. Cabanillas stated that she will continue care with her if Trevor and Christy choose to do so (at Anderson).

The second appointment really brought their spirits down. The surgeon was harsh, talked about how rare this cancer is and how it will most likely be a battle for the rest of her life. He even went as far to say that because there are so many infected lymph nodes in the chest that there are probably more that were not even seen. Christy and Trevor left this appointment very discouraged and sad.

Later in the evening after processing everything Christy and Trevor came to the conclusion that this was just the enemy. After the morning appointment Trevor and Christy were feeling encouraged, they realize that they enemy was trying to take that from them. Prayers are seriously needed to keep their spirits high and keeping the enemy from taking away or robbing them of good news. Christy is struggling with that right now.

Today’s appointments was an ultra sound at 8am, they found a 1 centimeter node that they biopsied. It was positive for Insular Thyroid Carcinoma. We will have to see what doctors Want to do with that information.

Christy believes that the ultrasound tech was sent straight to her as a gift from God. She saw Christy’s fear and she had a long talk with Christy on how God’s hand is in this, and that Christy is at Anderson for a reason. She told Christy, “God would not have sent you here, if there was not a reason. I know that he made you my patient today because I felt and knew I needed to talk to you about this.”

This afternoons appointment was with infectious disease at 1:00. Christy’s drain site from surgery was thought to be infected. The Infectious disease doctor did not see any infection and just took a culture to be safe.
Christy and Trevor is wanting to get Home to the kids so they are going to try to get an earlier flight Wednesday or Thursday. This will be depending on what we find out tomorrow and if there are no extra charges to change their flight.

Prayer Requests
– #1 Cancer does not spread to other parts of her body.
– UCLA doctor can get her in immediately and is knowledgeable of insular cancer like Dr. Cabanillas said.
– Early flight home, no fees and safe travels.
– Iodine treatment can be done immediately and is completely successful!
